10 spooky books that will definitely scare you | Book Recommendations

It’s finally spooky season!! The most wonderful time of the year!! And I have a bunch of spooky books I need to read. I think I do unintentionally save some horror/thriller/ghostly books for this time of year, so it’s finally time to dig in! I’ve been really into dark academia recently, so you will definitely find some of those on this list.

If you’re planning on reading any of the below books this month (or already have, and loved them) please let me know! I’m always looking for some buddy reading friends 🙂

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue | V.E. Schwab

If you haven’t heard about this book, I’m not sure where you’ve been because it’s probably one of the most talked about fantasy books. I was lucky enough to read it ahead of release, and let me tell you. It was a ride. I’m not sure if I would consider it a spooky book, but I’m including it in this ~spooky~ list because there is a scary devil villain.

Vita Nostra | Marina Dyachenko and Sergey Dyachenko

This is the spookiest weirdest fantasy book I’ve ever read. Ugh, it is so good. The sequel has also been translated into English. For the atmosphere alone, you should be reading this!

Catherine House | Elisabeth Thomas

Another dark academia on the list (when will it end????) This is a very weird book set in a university. It involves a secret society?? It is best read not knowing much about the plot, so I recommend picking this one up if you’re a fan of weird dark academia books.

Uzumaki | Junji Ito

I had to include a Junji Ito on the list. Every year I get closer to running out of books by him to read! Uzumaki is just a classic. There’s some weird stuff in here of course, but the art is just so cool!

Cemetery Boys | Aiden Thomas

This is about a trans queer brujo and GHOSTS! This was such a good story about family and relationships. It’s a perfect book if you’re not super into horror for spooky season.

Phantasma | Kaylie Smith

This book is if Caraval were set in a haunted house. It’s a spooky romance between a witch and a phantom? All my Danny Phantom girlies stand up!! This was really fun, but also quite violent and a little scary. The perfect spooky season read.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder | Holly Jackson

This is maybe my favorite YA mystery series. It is just so good!! It’s about a cold case. There is a romance subplot. There are so many twists and turns. The entire series eats. I also watched the Netflix series, and while it wasn’t exactly what I wanted, I will say it held up. Read this now!

The Risk | S.T. Abby

This is a romance between a woman serial killer and the FBI agent who’s trying to find the killer. Yes, it is just as messy as you might think. This was such a wild ride. I will say it get very dark, so if you don’t want to read about some pretty gnarly violence, I would give this one a pass.

Butcher & Blackbird | Brynne Weaver

This one is a romance between a serial killer and … a serial killer!!! Again, I would steer clear if you’re not into violence and gore. This one is closer to a dark comedy? It gets pretty serious at the end, but the tone is definitely not for everyone.

Fairydale | Veronica Lancet

This is such a trippy book lol. There’s some confusing magic and weird shit happening at the beginning of the book. You really just need to trust the process because otherwise, you’re going to be pissed about the lack of answers lol. The atmosphere is definitely giving spooky season. The ending was a bit disappointing for me, but other people loved it, so I recommend giving it a try!
