The best fantasy romance books to read this spring

I’ve been a fantasy reader for as long as I can remember. I love falling into a new world with foreign rules and interesting magic. As I got older, I became interested in contemporary novels and romance, eventually finding books that had both. Since then, I’ve been on the hunt for the best fantasy romance books!

Some of these books below are definitely more fantasy than romance while others are heavy on the romance plot with a fantastical backdrop. I love any and all flavors of the fantasy romance genre, and if you’re like me, I’m sure you’ll find something to love below!

I left out some of the most popular fantasy romance books and series, as I hope you can use this post to find something you may not have heard of before or weren’t sure you would be interested in. While I do love Throne of Glass and From Blood and Ash, these are books I think deserve a little more love.

The Crimson Moth Duology | Kristen Ciccarelli

I’d heard about the first book in the duology for so so long and wasn’t sure what to think. Luckily, I decided to dive in, and I’m so glad I did! The first book has an excellent portrayal of true enemies to lovers. The tension is amazing. The hatred is there. The first book was so fun, but I really fell in love thanks to the second book. I 100% recommend this one especially if you like books that are somewhere in between YA and adult romances.

The Shepherd King Duology | Rachel Gillig

The atmosphere in this duology! It’s so so immersive. This is such a good modern gothic series. The magic system is so interesting and unique! Again, I wasn’t sure about this series when I started and the second book absolutely made me fall in love! I know some people don’t love the second book as the POVs shift a bit, but ugh. The conclusion to this story is so amazing and I’m obsessed.

Once Upon a Broken Heart | Stephanie Garber

An absolutely beautiful trilogy! If you’ve already read Caraval, you already know how amazing Stephanie Garber’s writing is. It’s ethereal, it’s poetic, it’s all-encompassing. This series is no different, and I think the characterizations and plot are only elevated. I will say if you’re at all interested in reading Caraval, pick up that series before this one!

An Ember in the Ashes | Sabaa Tahir

What a classic!!! This is such a good series. Another enemies-to-lovers story that I became hardcore obsessed with when I read it. It’s been years since I read this series, so I’m not going to lie, I forgot a lot of it. I do remember that the characters are amazing and that the plot is full of twists and turns that will have you screaming. A must-read.

Sorcery of Thorns | Margaret Rogerson

Ugh what a beautiful book. The first time I read this one, I immediately thought of Howl’s Moving Castle (the movie). The writing is so gorgeous and the story is especially beautiful. This is about fighting librarians and sorcery. A book definitely written for readers who love fantasy.

Dance of Thieves | Mary E. Pearson

It’s been a while since I read this duology, but I absolutely loved it. This is another enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance and is a follow-up to the Kiss of Deception series. I unfortunately read this duology first and I would definitely recommend against doing that lol. The characters in this one are amazing as are the twists and betrayals. An absolute love from me.

Throne of the Fallen | Kerri Maniscalco

This was such a fun surprise! I think this book definitely skews more romance, but the plot was still really fun. This is definitely spicy compared to the previous recommendations. It follows the demon prince Envy as he tries to win a deadly game to save his court. He basically blackmail’s his way into getting help from the mysterious artist Camilla. Love!

Phantasma | Kaylie Smith

This is basically spooky Caraval! There are quite a few horror elements in this book, so if you’re not into scary stuff, I would probably give this one a pass. Ophelia joins a deadly game in the hopes of finding her sister. She gets the help of a Phantom named Blackwell… Obviously romance ensues. There are a lot of fun games and twisty reveals along the way. Love!

Quicksilver | Callie Hart

I know this book blew up online and I am one of the readers who loved it. Is it perfect? Probably not! But I had a blast reading and I couldn’t put it down. This is another fantasy romance book involving fae, but it has some interesting elements that I hadn’t seen before in books I’ve read previously. I can’t wait until the next book comes out!

Souls Trilogy | Harley Laroux

Ugh this series. Is so good. This is another one that I would consider horror romance, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re not into scary situations or gore. This series involves romancing with demons and a cult that has been plaguing a small town. The spicy is definitely a lot, so I would recommend looking into tags and triggers to see if it’s something you would be into!

Crowns of Nyaxia | Carissa Broadbent

A vampire romance that I absolutely fell in love with. I’m obsessed with this series! Another enemies-to-lovers story that takes place within a deadly game. There are so many twists and turns in this one! The pacing in these books is so good and will absolutely have you hooked.

Slaying the Vampire Conqueror | Carissa Broadbent

This book is set in the same world as the previous series but takes place in another country that isn’t ruled by vampires. Hence the vampire conqueror in the title. Our main character is a follower of another god and has some unique powers. She’s tasked with assassinating the aforementioned conqueror and…things go awry. I really love her writing and I think the characters were really well written in this one! This is definitely underrated compared to her other books!

Fairydale | Veronica Lancet

This book is so freaking weird lmao. It was one of the reasons I fell in love with it immediately. The beginning of the story is very mysterious and you really won’t know what’s going on for the majority of the book. While this may put some readers off, it was the reason I loved it so much! I wasn’t the biggest fan of the last third of this book, but the first two sections were such a fun ride that I’m willing to look past it.
