It’s finally spooky season!! The most wonderful time of the year!! And I have a bunch of spooky books I need to read. I think I do unintentionally save some horror/thriller/ghostly books for this time of year, so it’s finally time to dig in! I’ve been really into dark academia recently, so you will def find some of those on this list.
I will say I have already finished some of these / am currently in the middle of reading some of them. (but I will be saving my reviews for the end of the month hehe)
If you’re planning on reading any of the below books this month (or already have, and loved them) please let me know! I’m always looking for some buddy reading friends 🙂
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue | V.E. Schwab
If you haven’t heard about this book, idk where tf you’ve been because it’s probably one of the most anticipated releases this year???? I was lucky enough to read it ahead of release, and let me tell you. It was a ride. Idk if I would consider it a spooky book, but I’m including it in this ~spooky~ list because their is a scary devil villain.
Vita Nostra | Marina Dyachenko and Sergey Dyachenko
I’m about 80% done with this book right now, and all i can say so far is that I’m upset the 2 following books in the series have yet to be released in english. This is a dark academia book set in a magical (?) school in the middle of nowhere Russia… at least I believe it’s Russia. It’s so freaking weird hahaha. Im obsessed.
The Tenth Girl | Sara Faring
Another dark academia book on the list. I believe this has something to do with a girls boarding school in Argentina. And it’s a horror/thriller. I’m not sure what else, but I’m excited to see where it goes! I haven’t had the best luck with YA thrillers, so we shall see.
Now Entering Addamsville | Francesca Zappia
This is a book I’ve been meaning to read for a minute. I don’t think it had the best reviews, hence my putting it off haha. I’m pretty sure this involves ghosts and a small town (?) That’s all I know. Let’s goooo
My Lovely Wife | Samantha Downing
I heard about this book from Booksandlala and I know she loved it. That’s all! I think it has something to do with a couple who murders(?) people. There must be something more than that though, because I don’t think thats a spoiler at all.
Catherine House | Elisabeth Thomas
Another dark academia on the list (when will it end????) I’ve heard this is adult, but it can read YA. Not sure if thats a compliment or criticism. It’s set at I believe a boarding school. It’s gothic, spooky. Probably. All my favorite things.
Tomie | Junji Ito
I had to include a Junji Ito on the list. Every year I get closer to running out of books by him to read! I’ve seen fan art of Tomie all over the place and I can’t wait to read her story. I hope its weird and gruesome and completely twisted.
Elatsoe | Darcie Little Badger
I am ashamed to say I had an e-arc of this and wasn’t able to get to it before release day 🙁 I know! Shameful! I have no excuse beyond the fact that I’ve had a hard time reading in general this year. I’m excited for this one though. It’s own voices indigenous and includes an ace main character. We love!
Cemetery Boys | Aiden Thomas
Another book I should have read months ago. This is about a trans queer brujo? and *GHOSTS* And I’ve only heard good things. I have no excuse for not having read this earlier! There is no better time to read about summoning ghosts than the present.
A Peculiar Peril | Jeff Vandermeer
I have not yet read a Vandermeer, so I’m thinking a YA might be a good introduction. I know he his the king of weird ass books aka should theoretically be one of my favorite authors. The weirder the better for me.
