Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag | 2019

And it is officially time for all of us book people to start freaking out about all of the amazing books we’ve read so far this year while simultaneously freaking out about how many books are left on our tbr. I’ve had a pretty good beginning half of the year in regards to the books I’ve read, but I’m confident there are even more 5 star reads in my near future.

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2019.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

If you like dark fantasy (when I say dark, I mean dark), please read this book. The third and final book in the series comes out this year, so what better time to read it????????????????

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

If you like steamy enemies to lovers books, why haven’t you already read this?? It does the trope so well. I want to read it again. Like right now. Bye!

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2019.

The Dragon Republic by R.F. Kuang

I read both The Poppy War and this sequel this year, and they are both amazing, dark, and inventive. If adult fantasy is your thing, these books are amazing.

Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas

I truly think this is my favorite book in the TOG series. (I know, I know, my favorite book doesn’t include Manon?! I’m basically a monster.) I think this book is technically a companion novel, but imo it is 100% a sequel and a necessary read to understand the series. (It also redeemed Chaol for me, which was an impossible feat.)

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

Somewhere Only We Know by Maurene Goo

This is one of my most anticipated reads of 2019, and I can’t believe it’s already been out a month and I’ve yet to read it!!! I’m still currently on the waitlist for my library (who still don’t have it in circulation???) I love Maurene and I’m sure I’ll love this book just as much as her previous.

Middlegame by Seanan McGuire

I literally *had* this book. I checked it out from my library, carried it around in my bag, and read maybe the the first 5 pages before I had to return in. I’ve heard only good things about this and I’m l i t e r a l l y kicking myself thinking about how I gave it back without finishing (starting, tbh) it.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

Another book I’ve only heard good things about, and it is just sitting inside my kindle waiting to be read. I will! Very soon! Just based on the cover, I can already tell this is going to be exactly my vibe.

Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff

I still have yet to read the second book in this trilogy (don’t worry, it’s currently sitting on my bookshelf and will be read asap), but I still can’t wait to read this book. This is another arc that’s patiently waiting within my kindle, and I’m freaking pumped to read it.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

(Can you tell my highly anticipated releases have a theme, yet?) I’m sure you know about this book already as it’s so hyped. Tbh I know nothing about the plot, but I love Leigh and I love dark adult fantasies.

5. Biggest disappointment.

Again, but Better by Christine Riccio

Unfortunately, this just did not live up to my expectations. Feel free to peek at my full review here.

Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune by Roselle Lim

I was so excited to read this one! The writing/romance/etc just didn’t work for me. Like at all. If you want to read more of my thoughts, check out my review here.

I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn

Parts of this were so good! And other parts were not. I had a problem with the plot in this one, but I’m sure others will love it! Check out my full review of it here.

6. Biggest surprise.

We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal

I was pretty sure I was going to love this, but I didn’t realize how hard I would fall for it. This was ahhhmazing and I would definitely recommend you read it as soon as humanly possible.

7. Favorite new author.

Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore

This is the only book I’ve read from Anna-Marie, but I’ve got three others sitting on my shelf, and I CANNOT wait to dive into them. Her writing is perfection and everything I could ever dream of.

8. Newest fictional crush.

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Not sure if this is an actual crush, or just me squealing about the romance in this book. I don’t usually get crushes on characters in books, but I die for the romance between these two. *I will go down with this ship*

9. Newest favorite character.

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

I love my messy, anti-hero bb Rin. This b didn’t come to play and neither do I.

10. Book that made you cry.

I really haven’t cried over a book this year enough to be worthy for this category! (If you have any tear-jerker book recs, please send them my way)

11. Book that made you happy.

Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

If you know, you know.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

When The Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

I’m so happy I decided to get the paperback of this book, because LOOK AT IT!

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

hahahahaha

Is this a serious question??????? ALL OF THEM! HELLO????
