The trash fire that was 2020 has (finally) come to an end! Now let’s move on to 2021… of which I have absolutely zero expectations bc I do not want to jinx it lol. The only good thing about 2020 was that i (miraculously) completed my goodreads reading challenge of 100 books. I have been like 9 books behind schedule the entire second half of the year, so that truly is a miracle.
So, 2020 sucked, we get it yada yada. What you really came here for was to know about some good good books of 2020. I will say my taste is impeccable and thus you should definitely listen to my opinions and read all of the books below. Bc they slap.
So, in no particular order, may I present to you my top 10 books of the year!
The House in the Cerulean Sea | TJ Klune
If you don’t already know about this book, where the heck have you been??? It’s adorable, will 100% make you cry and is hella gay. We love to see it. Ugh I already can’t wait to reread it.
Vita Nostra | Marina & Sergey Dyachenko
Super super weird. Harry Potter if it was on drugs and set in Eastern Europe. Will make you ascend.
Catherine House | Elisabeth Thomas
Hella weird. Not for everyone (but I’m obsessed). I know a lot of people hated the main character, but I loved her. I loved seeing the house through her eyes.
The Roommate | Rosie Danan
Omg!!! So cute. So spicy. A sex-positive romance between an East Coast socialite and a porn star. Yes.
The Last True Poets of the Sea | Julia Drake
I think this is a queer retelling of Shakspeare’s Twelfth Night? I have not read/seen it, so I do not know if that is accurate lol. This book is heartbreaking and I love it. Set in a sleepy beach town. I imagine there is fog there, but I cannot confirm.
Foul Is Fair | Hannah Capin
This book has teeth! And they bite!!! This is a Macbeth retelling (I guess I’ve been into Shakespeare this year??) about a girl who is assaulted at a party and her vengeance. It’s so twisted and I’m obsessed.
Night Film | Marisha Pessl
omg I can’t believe I read this book in 2020! It feels like years ago. This book is problematic, but I love it. It’s so weird. There are secret codes and multimedia pieces you can access online. UGH!! I want more books like this.
The Kiss Quotient | Helen Hoang
This book was soooo sweeet. I love this entire series. I can’t wait for the third to come out this year.
A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor | Hank Green
I feel like I’ll probably read anything the Green brothers publish. I feel like me and Hank agree on almost every political and social take and he really puts his views in his writing. Also his tiktok is sick.
Punk 57 | Penelope Douglas
Maybe the most surprising book to make this list. I did not think I was a fan of new adult romances. And here we are!! This book is problematic, but so so good. I love the characters. I love the plot. I need to read more from her asap.
