My slightly disappointing September Wrap-Up

Okay so am I reading? Yes. Am I reading the books I should be reading? Literally not at all. I’m going to blame my library holds list and my continuously shifting reading preferences.

I ended up reading a total of 12 books in the month of september (yay!) Only 5 of which were arcs that I should have read probably even a month earlier (womp womp). I loved some, I hated some, some were really just okay.

Dreamin’ Sun 3, 4, 5 | Ichigo Takano ★★★★☆

I’m having a pretty good time reading this series. I don’t love the whole teen/adult romance situation. I think it’s less taboo in Japan, but I’m still iffy about it. I really have no idea where this series is headed though, ngl. I am conFUSED!

The Cruel Prince | Holly Black ★★★★☆

Omg I finally got around to reading this series! Just in time for the third book to come out in about a month. I love the fae, I love my slytherin bb Jude, I love how twisted this story is. Ngl, based on everyone’s raving about this series I really thought it was going to be more romance based, but it’s barely even in here! Like slightly, but that’s not the core driving force behind the plot (not a complaint!)

The Wicked King | Holly Black ★★★★☆

AGHHH this book. I was spoiled for the end of this, but if u know, u know. It still hit me pretty hard lol. I don’t know if there was a more heart-wrenching cliffhanger jfc. Jude and Cardan’s dynamic has me feeling like the most loyal piece of trash. The tension between them is so freaking good I’m obsessed

To Be Taught, If Fortunate | Becky Chambers ★★★★☆

I loved this book more and more as the story progressed. I’m going to do my best not to compare it to her previous series as they are so different, but there are definitely similarities there. The accepting and effortless way she writes inclusive books *chefs kiss* the way she writes science that sounds both easy to understand and also scientifically correct how???? I love her. I will read anything she writes

Serpent & Dove | Shelby Mahurin ★★★☆☆

I did not love this book, unfortunately. There were some things that I enjoyed. The magic system. The love to hate romance. But so so many problems with plot and they kept taking me out of the story. I really really underwhelmed by the ending and the twist. Overall, not terrible, but will most likely not be continuing with the series.

The Bride Test | Helen Hoang ★★★★☆

This was so cute! I loved the characters and the writing and pretty much everything about this. It was a super fast read with some ~steamy scenes~ and has Vietnamese rep and autism spectrum rep. I can’t wait to read the kiss quotient (i know, i know i don’t know how i haven’t read it already either!)

Bringing Down the Duke | Evie Eunmore ★★★★☆

Omg I am obsessed with this book. I’m pretty sure this is the first historical romance I’ve ever read and I was OBSESSED! I loved the characters and I loved the premise and how everything played out. So good. Feminist historicals are my jam

Don’t You Forget About Me | Mhairi McFarlane ★★☆☆☆

Ugh I really did not like this book. The premise set it up to be a romance, and I just did not agree with that at all lol. Also huge tw for sexual assault among others. Idk maybe I would have liked it if I knew what I was getting into, but I did not.

The Winner’s Kiss | Marie Rutkoski ★★★★☆

Omg the finale! So many things happened. *spoilers-ish* We finally finally get our ship *squeals* and I loved the ending. I can’t wait to see how/if these characters will play in her new book in this world????

The Turn of the Key | Ruth Ware ★★★★☆

This is definitely my favorite Ruth Ware. Omg the audiobook is superb. Imogen my OG audiobook narrator can do no wrong. The way she delivers some of these lines gave me physical goosebumps and I was AFRAID!! For my LIFE!! In my office at 2 pm!!! I wasn’t blown away by the reveal, but the story and set up is so deliciously creepy I really didn’t care lmao
